M. Teresa Paiva Weed (D – District 13, Jamestown, Newport) was first elected to the Rhode Island Senate in 1992. In January 2009, Senator Paiva Weed was first elected by her colleagues to serve as President of the Senate. She was re-elected President in 2011, 2013 and 2015.
On March 22, 2017, Paiva Weed announced that she would be accepting the position of president at the Hospital Association of Rhode Island. Her resignation from the state Senate was effective on March 31st.
